Students in Grade 5 receive approximately 195 minutes of instruction divided over three 65-minute lessons. Information is presented using a combination of class discussion, scientific diagrams, written information, interactive activities, and short video clips. If a student misses any lessons or parents/caregivers have opted to deliver the content through alternative means, please see the Parent Information Letter and the At-Home Learning Document linked below.

Lesson 1

Puberty Review: Students learn that puberty is responsible for making reproductive systems functional. Sperm production and egg release are tied to the ability for all animals and humans to create new life. Basic changes of puberty are discussed. These changes include: more body hair; increased height and weight; increased oil production; increased sweat production and body odour; changes in skin; oily hair; and the need for adequate sleep, exercise, and variety of foods.

Students develop a more detailed understanding of the structure and function of reproductive systems. Topics include testosterone and sperm production, estrogen production and ovulation, and menstruation. Instruction is provided using inclusive language that is based on physical body parts. Our focus is on biological sex, not a person’s gender.

Lesson 2

Biologically male reproductive system: Discussion includes testosterone production, sperm production, circumcised/intact foreskin, erections, and ejaculations/wet dreams. Internal and external reproductive parts and their function are discussed.

If time permits, the biologically female reproductive system is introduced. Internal and external reproductive parts and their functions are discussed. Discussion includes details about ovaries, the process of ovulation, and estrogen production and its effects on the body. Students are provided a detailed explanation of menstruation, including why periods happen, how often they happen, cramps, period tracking, what to expect, and how to prepare. Suggestions are given on how to create a period kit. Instructors demonstrate how to use pantyliners, pads, and period underwear. Tampons are mentioned but not demonstrated or discussed in detail.

Lesson 3

Any part of Lesson 2 that was not completed will be continued.

Personal boundaries and consent: The goal of this section is to discuss personal safety. Classes discuss how sperm cells might get to an egg cell through sexual intercourse (or sometimes fertility doctors). Sexual intercourse is described as an activity for grown-ups that both have consented to. It is made clear that kids cannot consent to sexual touch and that it is an unsafe touch for kids. Information is given on what to do if personal boundaries have been crossed or unsafe touch occurs (say no, move away, and speak to a trusted adult).

Anonymous questions: Students ask questions about topics they are still unclear about or curious about. Students do not need to ask questions but can make a comment instead. The teacher uses their professional experience to answer questions in an age-appropriate manner from a health based and safety perspective. Students are encouraged to continue these conversations at home with caregivers.
