Celebrating Educators in Central Okanagan Public Schools

Dear Colleagues,

Celebrating Diwali & our SWIS Team
On Friday, I had the privilege of attending a meeting with our Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS) team where they led a fun, engaging, and informative session on Diwali. As Diwali begins today, thank you for helping staff and students deepen cultural understanding across our schools.

What the SWIS Team does in our schools
Our SWIS team is a group of professional, highly educated people from all over the world dedicated to supporting newcomer families as they transition into Central Okanagan Public Schools. They provide essential settlement services—helping families navigate the school system, access community resources, and adjust to life in a new environment—while fostering a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere for students and families from diverse backgrounds.

Teaching Excellence Recognition
At last Wednesday’s public Board meeting (Oct 15), Trustees recognized Helen Park, Primary teacher at École Casorso Elementary, for receiving a 2025 Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence. Helen was recognized for her student-centred, inclusive practice that exemplifies our District's commitment to equity and excellence in learning. You can read her bio here. (ISED Canada)

COTA Provincial Pro-D — Friday, Oct 24 (Mount Boucherie Secondary School)
COTA’s October Pro-D Day runs this Friday at MBSS, featuring a keynote by Samantha Woods (Kaizen Education Services / The Brain Hub Academy) on executive-function skills and practical, research-informed strategies for classrooms. Teachers and administrators are invited to join members of the Learning & Innovation Team as they dig into exploring Agency through Inquiry. This will be a hands-on day all about inquiry-based learning, a powerful approach that boosts student agency, confidence, and engagement.

If your teachers are not attending the COTA conference, please remind them they must submit the District form for Pro-D. This can be found on the dashboard or by using this link.

Thank you for everything you do to create safe, caring, high-quality learning for every student.

Have a great week.

Regards,

Jon
