RED CEDAR BOOK CLUB
Interview with a famous author

Our grade 5/6 Red Cedar Book Club was lucky to have the opportunity to interview famous Canadian author Eric Walters. Students worked in groups to come up with two questions for the author. We have many of his books in the library and his book, “Safe as Houses” is a real hit with the students. After you read this interview, check out his website at: www.ericwalters.net

Interview with Eric Walters:

What inspired you to write disaster books?

I write about so many things, including disasters like 9/11 or Hurricane Hazel or the Tsunami.  These are issues that are in the news, are important, and contain compelling story lines.  I think that young people need to develop empathy for, and knowledge of, these real events and through my stories they can become more real.

What are some ideas for your new book?

I'm currently writing a number of books; The Creation of Hope is a non-fiction about my project in Kenya (www.creationofhope.com), Players is a co-write with Deb Ellis where we alternate chapters and write from the perspective of different characters, Shaken is set in Haiti around the earthquake, and Desert is set in the Tunisian desert around an adventure expedition.

-Spencer, Robson, Andrew and Jessica

How do you get the information you need to write a book?

I do a variety of things including books, internet, looking at videos, going to places, experiencing things, interviewing people and having experts review the initial drafts of my books.  For Alexandria of Africa I went to Kenya.  For Run, I interviewed family members and ran marathons along the trans-Canada hiway the way Terry did.  For We All Fall Down I read every article and book, saw every video, interviewed people who were there, and read every account of the internet.

What was your most favorite thing to do as a child?

Play road hockey and basketball, read, hang out with my friends.

-Tyrell, Nick, Nalan and Zac

Did a book or a person inspire you to write a book?

People and events are the basic inspirations for all my books.  Some are more personal.  Ricky is the story of me growing up.

Where did you write it?

I write everywhere all the time.

When did you take an interest in writing?

I've always liked writing.  When I was in grade 5 my teacher said to me 'that I could be a writer when I grew up."  I wrote my first novel when I was 36.  That was 68 novels and 17 years ago.

-Sydney, Marisa, Sarah and Marissa

How do you feel when you are writing a book and when you finish a book?

I LOVE when I'm writing a book.  Finishing it is full of mixed emotions; I'm glad to have reached the end of the story, but sad because it's over.

What are your favorite books out of the ones you’ve written?

My favorite book is the one I'm writing right now . . . until it's over . . . then the next is my favorite . . . and then the next . . . and the next.

-Raiya, Abbey, Kaytlin, Isabel and Meghan

When you are writing a book and have troubles what do you do?

I don't generally have troubles or what people call 'writers' block' because I do all my research, planning, plotting and story mapping before I begin writing.

If you weren’t a writer what would you be?

I'd still be teaching - probably grade 5 or 6 - and working part-time at the hospital in the  mergency department.

-Letesha, Malinda, Nikki, Claire and Sam

What's Happening in the library?

Students are visiting the library weekly: Exchanging books, hearing book/author talks or enjoying a story in the cozy corner.

For every book a child reads s/he can complete an entry form in the library.
Each week a winner is drawn from each grade level and a book prize of their choice is awarded.

We look forward to seeing you there and hope that you will be part of our exciting year.

Happy Reading!
