NOTE: AME's enrichment program is now under the direction of Mrs. Barb Nergaard (LAT) The following information, however, gives you a good idea as to what has been offered at our "enriching" school!
* Okanagan College RoboCup Junior
The 3rd annual Western Canada RoboCup Junior was held on Friday, November 21st, 2008. AME entered a team of four boys from Grade 5 and 6. This year's theme was Mission Impossible. The boys built their "spybot" from the LEGO Mindstorms NXT kit and programmed it to move to the theme song. The boys also had to choreograph a two minute routine to move along with the robot. Well done Dylan, Karson, Owen and Sam!
In November 2007, AME's robotic enrichment group placed FIRST in the 2nd Western Canada RoboCup Junior competition! Reid, Joel, Tyus and Dylan placed first in the dance category of the competition with their Star Wars VII - The Robotic Adventure team. These boys had to build a LEGO Mindstorms robot, program it to "dance" to music (Star Wars), design costumes and then dance along with their robot in front of judges. They were amazing! Congratulations boys!
In November 2006, our AME "popcorn" robotics team placed SECOND in the 1st Western Canada RoboCup Junior competition held at Okanagan College.
*Canwest CanSpell Spelling Bee
In mid-November, AME will be starting an enrichment group that will concentrate on learning more about words and where they originate from. We will be meeting once a week to study root origins and the clues that we can use to help us spell. In January 2009, we will be having a school-wide spelling bee with the winner representing AME at the regional Canspell spelling bee at the Rotary Centre for the Arts on February 21st, 2009. The winner of this regional bee will receive an all-expense paid trip to Ottawa to compete at the national level!
Congratulations to Carleen who placed first in last year's AME spelling bee. Carleen represented our school at the Regional CanSpell Spelling Bee held in Penticton on March 8, 2008. Way to go, Carleen!!
*Endangered Animal Research and Board Game
Two groups of enrichment students created their own board game for endangered animals. Each student had to research an endangered animal of their own choice and then create sixteen trivia questions using multiple choice or true/false. All trivia questions were pooled together under the categories of Habitat, Physical Appearance, Special Features and Food. For the culmination of this project, students played their endangered animal trivia game which was loosely based on the Trivial Pursuit game format.

*Solar Car Race - June 2009 (teams will be start working on their cars in May 2009)
In 2008, AME had two teams representing our school at the annual School District #23 Solar Car Race. Our Grade Four team was comprised of Max. Tyler and Dylan. Our Grade Five team was comprised of Joel, Aaron and Karson. Both teams constructed a solar car from a kit which runs on a solar panel. Teams raced against other cars at Quigley Elementary on May 30th. Both teams advanced through several heats but were defeated in the semi-finals. We are very proud of our teams as over 65 teams competed! Way to go boys!
