NMSA This We Believe

Greetings and Welcome to Springvalley Middle School.

As you get to know our school, I trust you will be as impressed and excited about what happens in the Hive as I am.  We are very proud of SMS, and the staff and students work very hard to make this a welcoming, safe place for learning.

If you are new to SMS for 2010-11 ~ Welcome!  Be sure to get involved in as many of our fabulous activities and programs as possible.  We have a tremendous music program, drama, art, applied skills (shop and cooking classes), Outdoor Education, Career Life Programs (including Junior Achievement, Young Entrepreneurs), Hockey Skills Canada Acadamy, WEB Leadership, a strong athletics program (home of the 2010 Grade 8 Girls Cross Country Running City Champions! - Go Stingers Go!), intramural sports, and contests at lunch (Rock Band, Guitar Hero, DDR, Stella Stella Ola, Rock Paper Scissors, etc).

Students who demonstrate the attributes of our acronym REACH (Respect, Excellence, Accountibility, Cooperation, and Honesty) receive Red Stinger Tickets and are entered into draws for outstanding prizes.  In the past, we've given away an IPod Touch, an Acer Netbook and a Giant Mountain Bike among other, smaller prizes.

If you have questions about SMS or any of our programs, please call the school anytime.  Any of our staff would be happy to answer your questions.

If you are interested in the philosophy behind many of the structures and strategies associated with the Core Middle School Values that form a focus for us at SMS, please explore the links (on the left menu bar) to the National Middle School Association and their "This We Believe" position paper.

Mr. Lea's Tips for Success
One of the most important things to do to be successful in school is to GET INVOLVED! The more involved you are in your studies, in your extra-curricular activities (sports, clubs, etc), and in your social groups, the more you will enjoy school, and, ultimately, the better you will do in your academics!
Read, Read, Read!
Reading can be one of the most enjoyable activities we do - it allows you to go places you've never been before, do things you've never done, and even be someone you've never been. And it doesn't have to look like school! ANY reading you do - magazines, comic books, short stories, newspapers, even blogs - is good.
School Planning Council
At SMS we work very hard to include our entire community in the planning process and setting achievement goals for our students. This past year, a dedicated group of parents and teachers worked very hard to create a living document that can help guide our practice throughout the year. Our intent was to create goals and measures that will allow us to measure and adjust regularly and not just once a year.
