Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy Service
Who qualifies for this service?
Students qualify for this service if they:
- have physical disabilities as determined by the physical or occupational therapist in consultation with the school-based team
Who provides the service?
Description of staff qualifications:
- a diploma or degree from a recognized university
- registered with the College of Physical Therapists of BC and/or the College of Occupational Therapists of BC
How is the service provided?
Physical and occupational therapists may:
- assess the impact of a student’s physical disability on school performance
- facilitate disability awareness activities
- interpret medical information and the educational implications
- train students and staff in the use of specialized equipment
- train staff in back care and proper techniques for lifting and handling students
- recommend specialized equipment, modifications, or adaptations to promote participation and the highest level of independence in school, home, and community settings
- work with teachers, support staff, and parents to provide programs that enhance the fine and gross motor function of the students with disabilities
- recommend seating modifications and positioning techniques
- facilitate referrals to appropriate community or medical services
- recommend adaptations to sports and recreational programs to optimize participation
