Vision Resource Service
Who qualifies for this service?
Students qualify for this service, as determined by an optometrist or ophthalmologist, if they have one of the following:
- a visual acuity of 6/21 (20/70) or less in the better eye after correction
- a visual field of 20 degrees or less
- any progressive eye disease with a prognosis of becoming one of the above in the next few years
- an uncorrectable visual problem or reduced visual stamina such that the student functions as if his/her visual acuity is limited to 6/21 (20/70) or less
Who provides the service?
Description of staff qualifications:
- a master’s degree or diploma in the education of the visually impaired
- vision resource teachers may have orientation and mobility training and/or certification
How is the Service Provided?
Vision resource teachers may:
- perform functional vision assessments
- interpret ophthalmological reports
- interpret implications of visual impairment on overall development
- contribute to Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals
- design educational and instructional strategies
- train students in the use of appropriate optical aids and computer equipment required for academic learning
- provide alternate format materials (Braille, large print, tape, e-text) to support the curriculum
- consult with the school-based team regarding program requirements
- make referrals to appropriate service providers
- act as a resource in the field of vision
- provide direct instruction
- provide orientation and mobility training
- consult with Provincial Outreach Programs
