There will be a parent information session on May 22nd to help parents understand how they can help prevent their child from getting involved in gang activity. The session will take place at 6:00 p.m. at the Hollywood Road Education Centre (1040 Hollywood Road South).
Gang Reduction through Informed Practice (GRIP) aims to prevent gang involvement through education for parents and students. British Columbia’s gang landscape is vastly different from other jurisdictions. Children from all socio-economic backgrounds can be vulnerable to gang recruitment and involvement. Youth are being recruited in ways that our communities have never seen before.
Topics will include:
- an overview of the current B.C. gang landscape
- information on how gang members are recruiting
- what attracts children and youth to the gang lifestyle
Kelowna is one of 12 B.C. communities receiving training opportunities and a variety of intensive supports targeting students, parents, educators, law enforcement, and local partners as part of the Ministry of Education’s ERASE (Expect Respect and a Safe Education) strategy.
