Sale of home built by Residential Constuction students finalized KELOWNA, BC: On Thursday, Jan. 15, at 10:00 a.m., construction industry and education professionals will gather to commemorate the sale of a home built by students in Rutland Secondary School’s Residential Construction program. Twelve students were involved in almost every aspect of the construction from placing the forms for the foundation to framing and installing windows. The students worked under the guidance of instructors Bob Boback and Bruce Logan and general contractor Harmony Homes. The 2,400 square foot, bi-level home at 160 Hardie Road in Kelowna was completed in September 2008. The sale of home was recently finalized with approval from the Ministry of Education. The selling price of $485,000 will generate a profit of $30,000 to $35,000, estimates District Secretary-Treasurer Larry Paul. Proceeds of this sale will fund tuition fees for students who wish to pursue additional technical training at Okanagan College. The proceeds will also be used to purchase a lot at 203 Poonian Street, where students will soon begin work on the third home in the Residential Construction program. “The dual-credit Residential Construction program offered through Rutland Senior Secondary School is part of an extensive array of special courses and programs offered by School District No. 23,” says Rolli Cacchioni, Chairperson of the Board. “This type of program allows students to specialize in areas of personal interest and gain skills that lead them to jobs in our local economy. We value our partnership with Okanagan College in this venture and the tremendous support the program receives from its sponsors.” "As a partner in this project we take great pride in the success of this program, the achievements of the students and the strong community support for this initiative,” said Jim Hamilton, president of Okanagan College. The Residential Construction program is a joint undertaking by School District No. 23 and Okanagan College. This career training program allows students to complete their Grade 12 diploma as they gain marketable skills and level one technical credit towards their apprenticeship. Students take regular high school courses from September to January and then begin the construction project. Students receive instruction from January to March with Bob Boback, a RSS teacher and Red Seal Carpenter with extensive construction experience. On-site work takes place from March to July. Once the project is complete, students have the opportunity to attain the last three levels of technical certification at Okanagan College. This college training is supported by School District No. 23 through scholarships and bursaries.
