Students Explore Career Options at a Fine Arts, Design and Media Conference

KELOWNA, BC: In the Rise of the Creative Class, author Richard Florida argues convincingly that creativity is at the heart of society’s wealth generation and the key to vibrant communities.  As more people begin to appreciate the various forms of creative expression and young people are exploring their career options, School District No. 23 has arranged a conference titled Careers in Fine Arts, Design and Media

On Monday, Dec. 8, as many as 175 students in Grades 10, 11, and 12 will participate in the conference at the Rotary Centre for the Arts and the Mary Irwin Theatre.

“For students who are creative, working in the arts can be a very satisfying choice,” says Kelly McRae, Career Programs Consultant. “We hope that this conference will provide them with information about viable career options.  We have arranged to have experienced, practicing artists give presentations and workshops and answer students’ questions.  The Arts is a very broad field encompassing visual and performing arts as well as media or computer-aided design so there is a great deal for students to discover.”

This conference is a joint project by the Career/Life Department at School District No. 23 and the Rotary Centre for the Arts.  The District is grateful to the many artists who are volunteering their
time and expertise for students.

Following a keynote address by Susan Knight from Sun FM, students will participate in hands-on workshops in various disciplines including: pottery and ceramics; creative writing; dance; music; stage management, stage production; set design; jewellery design/making and acting.
